Adekunle Gold’s sixth album, Fújì, takes its name from the improvisational Nigerian genre, but it’s more than a tribute it’s the full-throttle convergence of the artist’s personal history with the rich tradition of Yoruba oral music.
“Fújì is the sound of Lagos,” Gold explains. “I grew up on it. It’s ingrained in me.”
Over a decade into his career, Gold has consistently woven threads of Nigeria’s musical past into his Afrobeats tapestry. From the jùjú-inflected early hits like “Sade” to his broader experiments on Afro Pop, Vol. 1, he has always carried a griot’s soul.
With Fújì, that influence crystallizes into a definitive statement. The album’s title began as an acronym.“Finding Uncharted Journeys Inside” but Gold realized the sound had always been his foundation. “I have a fújì-sounding song on every album,” he says. “So I might as well show the world this sound that I grew up on.”
Built on a rich percussive base, Fújì deftly merges heritage with personal narrative. Tracks like the autobiographical “Big Fish” and the celebratory “Many People” showcase the storytelling techniques of Yoruba oral tradition, while love songs like “My Love Is the Same” reveal his sentimental core.
For Gold, this is more than music; it’s a duty. “I love my culture and traditions,” he says. “I will always uphold them.”
